Understanding the Literacy Crisis: Examining the Factors Behind Declining Reading Proficiency

Hi Guys,
Welcome to the inaugural edition of Read & Lead, where I aim to empower you with the knowledge and tools to enrich children’s literacy skills outside of school all across America. But you may ask, “Well, what’s the problem?” I’m glad you asked. Today, we delve into a pressing issue that affects us all: our nation's literacy crisis.

Reading and writing are two of a person's most important skills. Without them, we wouldn't be able to get a job, go to college, or interact with the world. In schools, a child's reading and writing should be of the utmost importance. But did you know that according to ThinkImpact, 21% of adults nationwide are illiterate, and 54% have a literacy rate below the 6th-grade level? Shocking, Right? Together, we must prevent those numbers in future generations with every chance we get.

According to EducationWeek, “As of January 24, 2024, 37 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws or implemented new policies related to evidence-based reading instruction since 2013.” A few of those states are Alabama with the Alabama Literacy Act, Arkansas with the Arkansas LEARNS Act, and Georgia with the Georgia Early Literacy Act. Those acts were created to help schools implement the science of reading into schools and provide teachers with the necessary curriculum and materials. With laws passed like these, America’s future generations will start reading with a strong foundation.
As we wrap up this edition of Read & Lead, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your dedication to nurturing children's literacy skills worldwide.
Together, we're igniting a love for reading and writing in young minds everywhere. Every story shared, every book read, and every word written is a step towards a brighter future for all children.
Thank you for being part of this journey to empower the next generation of leaders and learners. Let's continue to make a difference, one page at a time.
With warm regards,
Jahiem Wilcher
